  7. Apple's QuickTime plug-in lets you view QuickTime movies and QuickTime
  8. VR (Virtual Reality) Panoramas and Objects directly in your browser
  9. window. This read-me describes what you will need and how to use the
  10. Macintosh version of Apple's QuickTime plug-ins for the Internet. If you
  11. are a Windows user, please see the Windows read-me.

  13. ATTENTION Netscape Navigator Users: This version of the QuickTime
  14. plug-in is newer than the 1.0 version shipping with Netscape Navigator
  15. 3.0. Check out the new features listed below!

  25. Installing the QuickTime Plug-in
  26. --------------------------------
  27. To take full advantage of the QuickTime plug-in, you will need to
  28. install QuickTime 2.5, the plug-in (and optionally the QuickTime Virtual
  29. Reality component and the QuickTime MPEG extension), and configure your
  30. browser to use the plug-in. Here are the details of what you will need
  31. and how to configure it.

  34. What you need
  35. -------------
  36. ･ Macintosh or Power Macintosh running System 7 or later
  37. ･ A browser that supports plug-ins: Netscape 2.x, Netscape 3.x, or
  38. Internet Explorer for Macintosh 2.1. (Note: We are evaluating a
  39. pre-release beta version of Internet Explorer 3.0.)
  40. ･ QuickTime 2.5 for Macintosh
  41. ･ Macintosh Sound Manager version 3.2 for Macintosh (included in System
  42. 7.5.3 and QuickTime 2.5)
  43. ･ The latest version of Apple's QuickTime Plug-in for the Internet (
  44. Macintosh)
  45. ･ Version 1.00 or later of the QuickTime MPEG extension.
  46. ･ Sufficient free memory. RAM requirements depends which browser you
  47. use. We recommend your Macintosh have an additional 1 MB of free RAM
  48. beyond that required by the browser you are running.

  51. Install QuickTime 2.5
  52. --------------------- 
  53.  
  54. Please make sure you have QuickTime 2.5, which is available on the WWW
  55. at the QuickTime software page (http:¥¥quicktime.apple.com¥sw¥sw.html).
  56. The QuickTime software will be downloaded as a compressed archive called
  57. qt25.hqx. If you are using Netscape 3.0, this file should decompress
  58. automatically to a folder called "Net Install".
  59.  
  60. If the file does not expand, you may need StuffIt Expander 4.0 from
  61. Aladdin Systems. You can download this software from Aladdin's Web site
  62. at http://www.aladdinsys.com/consumer/updates.html. To use StuffIt
  63. Expander to decompress the file, launch StuffIt Expander and select
  64. "Expand..." from the "File" menu and choose qt25.hqx. StuffIt Expander
  65. will decompress the file and create the "Net Install" folder.
  66.  
  67. Open the Net Install folder, open the "Install Disk 1" folder inside of
  68. it, and launch the Installer application. This will place all of the
  69. necessary QuickTime software in the proper places on your computer. You
  70. will need to restart your computer after running the installer.

  73. Install the QuickTime plug-in and optional extensions
  74. -----------------------------------------------------

  76. Download the plugin (mac_qtpi.hqx) from the QuickTime software page. The
  77. downloaded file is a compressed archive which should automatically
  78. expand and unarchive to a file called "QuickTime plugin". Put this file
  79. in the plug-ins folder for the browser you are using. You'll need to
  80. quit and restart the browser.
  81.  
  82. If the file does not expand, you may need StuffIt Expander 4.0 from
  83. Aladdin Systems. You can download this software from Aladdin's Web site
  84. at http://www.aladdinsys.com/consumer/updates.html. To use StuffIt
  85. Expander to decompress the file, launch StuffIt Expander and select
  86. "Expand..." from the "File" menu and choose mac_qtpi.hqx. StuffIt
  87. Expander will decompress the file.

  89. If you would like to use the Beta release of the QuickTime MPEG
  90. extension to play back MPEG movies with the plugin, you will need to
  91. download the MPEG Installer from the QuickTime BETA Software Page. Be
  92. sure to read the documentation that comes with the MPEG software.

  95. Configure Your Browser
  96. ----------------------

  98. The Macintosh QuickTime plug-in can be used to Fast Start a variety of
  99. media types in addition to QuickTime movies. But you may need to tell
  100. your browser to use it. Complete instructions are in are in the Browser

  141. Q  Why should I install the QuickTime plug-in?
  142.  
  143. A  Apple's QuickTime plug-in for the Internet lets you experience
  144. QuickTime content directly in the browser window. You no longer need a
  145. "helper application" like MoviePlayer to view QuickTime content over the
  146. Internet. You can also view QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality) Panoramas and
  147. Objects right in your browser.
  148.  
  149. The QuickTime plug-in works with existing QuickTime movies, and with
  150. movies prepared to take advantage of the plug-in's "fast-start" feature.
  151. The fast-start feature will present the first frame of the movie almost
  152. immediately and can begin playing even before the movie has been
  153. completely downloaded.
  154.  
  155. Your browser can be set up to use the QuickTime plug-in automatically to
  156. play any QuickTime movie while browsing the Internet.  The plug-in can
  157. play many kinds of QuickTime movies (.mov files) including movies with
  158. text, MIDI, and other kinds of data. It will also let you interact with
  159. QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects. Version 1.1 of the QuickTime plug-in
  160. supports other file formats as well - you no longer need half-a-dozen
  161. plug-ins to support each different type of audio or video file that you
  162. may encounter on the Web since QuickTime 2.5 and the plug-in can play
  163. them back for you.

  166. Q  I dowloaded the QuickTime MPEG extension and my browser is configured
  167. to use it, but it doesn't work. Why not?
  168.  
  169. A  You probably have a 68k Macintosh. The MPEG extension only works with
  170. PowerPC Macintoshes.
  171.  
  172. Q  I have a 68k Mac so I can't use the QuickTime MPEG extension. But the
  173. QuickTime plug-in is configured to look for it to play MPEG files. How
  174. to do I tell the plug-in NOT to look for the MPEG Component?
  175.  
  176. A The answer depends on which browser you are using:
  177.  
  178. Netscape 3.0: The Helper preferences for the MPEG mime type should be
  179. set to save to disk.
  180.  
  181. Netscape 2.0 or Internet Explorer. To reconfigure the plug-in to not
  182. include support for MPEG: Load a (non-MPEG) movie with the plug-in, then
  183. click and hold on the movie, and select 'Update Mime Types' from the
  184. pop-up menu. This will force the plug-in to scan the system capabilities
  185. and set its list of supported mime types  appropriately. You will need
  186. to quit and relaunch the browser after doing this. See the Browser

  191. Q How much memory (RAM) do I need to use the plug-in, and are there any
  192. ways to reduce RAM requirements?
  193.  
  194. A  Macintosh RAM requirements depends which browser you use. We
  195. recommend your Macintosh have an additional 1 MB of free RAM beyond that
  196. required by the browser you are running. For instance, if you are using
  197. the Navigator 3.0 version, which in recent releases came configured to
  198. use 9 MB of RAM, you will need 10 MB free to run Navigator and the
  199. plug-in. Check the RAM requirements for your browser by clicking on the
  200. browser's icon in the Finder and choosing "Get Info" from the File menu.
  201.  
  202. Your RAM mileage may vary so you may not require as much as stated
  203. above. Different browsers may require different amounts of memory.
  204. Turning off unneeded extensions and quitting other running applications
  205. may help reduce memory requirements.
  206.  
  207. For best performance, we recommend turning Virtual Memory off if
  208. possible.
  209.

  211. Q Is there any special configuration or set-up I need to do depending on
  212. which browser I am using?
  213.  
  214. A Yes; different browsers require different set-up. See the Browser
  215. Configuration document (http://quicktime.apple.com/sw/
  216. browserconfig.html) for more information.

  219. Q I am using a Web browser other than Netscape Navigator or Internet
  220. Explorer and I am experiencing problems with the QuickTime plug-in.
  221.  
  222. A  In this release the QuickTime plug-in only supports Netscape
  223. Navigator 2.x, 3.x, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1.
  224.

  226. Q How do I save a QuickTime movie from a Web page to my hard-drive?
  227.  
  228. A Just click and hold the mouse down over the movie. A popup will appear
  229. that lets you save the movie.
  230.  
  231.  
  232. Q I design web pages and would like to know more about movie controls
  233. and other capabilities of the QuickTime plug-in. Where should I look for
  234. documentation?
  235.  
  236. A  Please check the QuickTime Webmaster's Page on the web at
  237. http://quicktime.apple.com/sw/webmaster_1.1.html to learn about all of
  238. the capabilities of the Quicktime plug-in.

  241. Q I downloaded the QuickTime software - it showed up with the extension
  242. .hqx and when I click on it, nothing happens.
  243.  
  244. A The suffix .hqx is used for files that have been Bin-Hex compressed. To
  245. decompress these files, you need an application such as StuffIt Expander
  246. 4.0 from Aladdin Systems. Some browsers come with this software but
  247. others do not. StuffIt Expander is free - you can download this software
  248. from Aladdin's Web site at http://www.aladdinsys.com/consumer/updates.html.

  251. Q When I click on a QuickTime VR Object or Panorama, I get a blank
  252. window. How do I get VR to work with the QuickTime plug-in on the
  253. Macintosh?
  254.  
  255. A You may not have enough free memory. Try quitting open applications or
  256. disabling unneeded extensions to increase your free memory.
  257.  
  258.  
  259. Q The QuickTime movies I'm viewing don't always play smoothly. What's
  260. wrong?
  261.  
  262. A  Check to see if you have Virtual Memory turned on. Virtual memory can
  263. interfere with the plug-in's ability to play back QuickTime movies. If
  264. possible, turn virtual memory off for best performance.
  265.

  267. Q I found a page with background audio and a VR Panorama. As I was
  268. playing with the VR movie, the audio stopped playing. Why?
  269.  
  270. A  When you are interacting with the VR movie and moving the mouse, the
  271. audio movie will stop temporarily. Releasing the mouse button should
  272. allow the audio to resume.
  273.  
  274.  
  275. Q I am browsing a page with a QuickTime VR panorama and expect that I
  276. can use the option and control (shift and control on Windows) to zoom
  277. in/zoom out of the movie. Likewise, with a regular QuickTime movie, I
  278. expect the arrow keys to step through the movie a frame at a time. But
  279. the movies don't seem to respond to keystrokes.

  281. A  You need to select the QuickTime VR panaroma or QuickTime movie first
  282. by clicking on it. On Windows, the arrow keys do not step through the
  283. movie as they do on the Macintosh.

  286. Q  I have a Power Macintosh with 16MB of RAM.  When I try to run a music
  287. movie I get no audio.
  288.  
  289. A You are probably still using QuickTime 2.1, which requires additional
  290. memory to play MIDI movies. You should upgrade to QuickTime 2.5, which
  291. is available on the QuickTime Software page.
